What Is NA?

Our message is hope and the promise of freedom from active addiction.

Narcotics Anonymous is a fellowship of recovery.

Narcotics Anonymous, often called NA, is a community of people who meet regularly to help one another stay clean and find a new way to live. NA is open to anyone who thinks they may have a problem with drugs and has a desire to stop using.

You do not need to be clean before you come to a meeting. You do not need to know what to say. You do not need to believe anything specific. You are welcome to simply show up, listen, and decide for yourself whether NA may be helpful for you.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using.

“What is our message? The message is that an addict, any addict, can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use, and find a new way to live.”

Narcotics Anonymous, Sixth Edition, p. 68.

What happens at an NA meeting?

NA meetings are places where recovering addicts share their experience with addiction and recovery. Meetings may include readings, discussion, speaker sharing, or time for members to talk about what recovery looks like in their daily lives.

NA meetings are not classes, counseling sessions, or group therapy. No one is there to diagnose you, judge you, or tell you what you have to do. Members share what has worked for them and offer support to others who are seeking recovery.

If you are new, you are welcome to introduce yourself by your first name, but you are not required to share. Many people attend their first meeting just to listen.

Is NA religious?

NA is a spiritual program, but it is not a religious organization. People from many different beliefs, backgrounds, and life experiences attend NA. Some members are religious, some are not, and many are still figuring out what they believe.

Does NA cost anything?

There are no dues or fees to attend NA. Meetings may pass a basket for voluntary contributions from members, which helps pay for things like rent, literature, and local services. Newcomers are welcome whether or not they contribute.

You are welcome here.

Recovery can begin with one meeting. Whether you are certain you need help or simply wondering if NA is for you, you are welcome to attend a meeting.

You do not have to do this alone.
